Men's Formal Wear


Men's formal wear or formal clothing is a general fashion term used for describing clothing that is worn by men on various formal occasions such as weddings, social gatherings, in business and corporate meetings etc. Western formal wear and traditional formal wear are the two broad categories into which men's formal wear can be classified.

The category of men's formal wear can be traced to the early 16th century when men used to dress up for various occasions. Men of the high strata, particularly dressed in heavy tail coats as an evening wear. With the passage of time, these bulky and uncomfortable formal clothing and garment were replaced by more comfortable garments with stylish cuts.

Types of Men's Formal Wear

There are two types of formal wear that are commonly worn by men. They are Western Formal Wear and Traditional Formal Wear.

Western Formal Wear

This clothing type has an important influence on different countries. Roughly speaking, the conventional western formal wear for men include a (dress) tailcoat, formal trousers, white bow tie, white vest or men's waistcoat, white plain shirt having a detachable wing collar, cuff links and shirt studs. Apart from this, a black leather court shoe too is included in men's formal wear. However, in modern times, the western formal wear for men have not remained so rigid and now instead of white bow tie and white waistcoat, black waistcoats for men are also acceptable as formal wear.

This clothing type of men's formal wear is worn in different countries according to the traditions of that particular place. For example, Sherwani is a traditional outfit widely worn during wedding and other occasions by men in many Asian countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh etc. and thus can be called traditional men's formal wear of Asian region.

Fabrics Used in Men's Formal Wear

A variety of fabrics are used for manufacturing high quality and stylish formal wear for men. These fabrics can be natural and synthetic blend of both. Synthetic fibers like polyester are often blended with natural fibers for giving the garment fabric certain finishes and characteristics.
