Formal wear or formal clothing is a general fashion term used for
describing clothing that is worn by men on various formal occasions such
as weddings, social gatherings, in business and corporate meetings etc. The category of men's formal wear can be traced to the early 16th century when men used to dress up for various occasions. Men of the high strata, particularly dressed in heavy tail coats as an evening wear. With the passage of time, these bulky and uncomfortable formal clothing and garment were replaced by more comfortable garments with stylish cuts.
There are two types of formal wear worn by men. They are:
- Western Formal Wear: This clothing type has an
important influence on different countries.
- Traditional Formal Wear: This clothing type is worn in different countries and the garment is specific to a particular country. eg; Sherwani is a traditional outfit widely worn during wedding and other occasions by men in India.
A variety of fabrics are used for manufacturing high quality and stylish formal wear. These fabrics can be natural and synthetic blend of both. Synthetic fibers like polyester are often blended with natural fibers for giving the garment fabric certain finishes and characteristics. A list of fabrics used is presented below:
